What I am thankful for.....

1. AP Biology classes who are willing to try to get leaves to sink for 90 minutes.
2. AP Biology classes who refuse to give up when leaves dont sink for 90 minutes.
3. AP Biology classes that believe leaves will actually sink
4. AP Biology classes that are prepared to come in on Monday and give it another shot.
5. And most importantly....5 days of break to regain my sanity and prove to you that it does work!!!

***There was absolutely ZERO photoshopping done in capturing this image!!!

Oh yeah I also got the other lab to work as well!!!  More operator error!!!

Go to youtube and search Sinking Leaf Disks by ksbioteacher.  It gives some great hints.

I hope everyone had a nice restful holiday and are prepared for 4 big weeks of AP Biology and Anatomy.  See everyone tomorrow!!!  We will conquer photosythesis and transpiration this week!!!

Correction on How the movement of water opens/closes stomata

Thanks to a question posed by Maddie D. in second block, it allowed me to further analyze the opening and closing of stomata in the epidermis of the leaf.

Using workbook page 71 and textbook page 477 (and the diagrams on both) as you read through this description of the events needed to open and close the stomata.

Here is the situation that occurs to allow the guard cells to open (reverse process to close)

1. Need for more Carbon Dioxide in cells due to increased photosynthetic activity
2. K+ ions enter guard cells (through active diffusion)
3. The increase in K+ ions in the guard cells, decreases the water concentration in the gaurd cells allowing water to flow into the cells from surrounding epidermal cells
4.  The increase in Turgor pressure OPENS the stoma (this is what I had backwards this morning)

M.D. thank you for being prepared and asking about this in class.

Again I apologize for any confusion and will clarify on Monday. -Mr. Cheney

Photosynthesis Prep

Read pages 120-126 (7.1-7.3)

You must read these pages carefully to get an understanding of the process of photosynthesis. I suggest you read these pages, take a break do the workbook pages, and then go back and reread the pages.  The workbook pages will break down the process of photosynthesis

Orange workbook pages 23 (2-4)  24 (1-2) 25 (1-2) 26 (read) 27 (1-7)

Plants Unit

We are starting our Botany Unit, we will need to continue to apply concepts learned in the previous quarter to the wide world of plants.   Plants are pretty simple organisms, but do not let their simplicity surprise you.   They are great examples of organisms that can be used to explain MOST biological processes.

Evolution of Land Plants      11/8-11/13    Chapter 23: 420-440

Structure and Function of Land Plants 11/13-11/30

Roots, Shoots and Leaves               Chapter 24: 44-460      Biozone: 68, 72-73, 75-77
Gas Exchange                                Chapter 25: 464-479     Biozone : 69-71
Nutrition and Transport                  Chapter 25: 464-479     Biozone : 78-84
Growth and Response                    Chapter 26: 484-498     Biozone : 85-87, 64, 193-200
Reproduction                                 Chapter 27: 501-516
Photosynthesis                                      Chapter 7: 120-131       Biozone :  15, 23-28, 295

Power Outage Due Dates

Diffusion Lab Report Due Friday 11/9...But I will take them if you are finished.   Any previews need to be turned in on Monday!!!

MC and FRQ test will be on Wednesday 11/7.

Reminder that STUDENTS do not have school on Thursday, due to conferences.

If you have any questions email me at joseph.cheney@bayschoolsohio.org

See you Monday!! If you are absolutely bored out of your mind,  Botany/Photosynthesis is the next unit. Chapters 7, 23-27.  Workbook pages are in the Orange Biozone.

It is supposed to be nice this weekend, get outside and enjoy yourselves after being cooped up all week.  Go to Columbus to support the Girls XC or Ashland to watch the Boys Soccer Team.

Good Luck XC!!

Good Luck at States, Maddie and Hallie, May Your Cellular Respiration be running at its maximum potential!!!

Power outage

AP students, hopefully you have your biology book and workbook with you.  Change of plans and due dates.   Diffusion lab report due 5 days after we return to school (as of now that would be Tuesday).  M/C test will be Monday FRQ test will be Tuesday, provided we get back to school this week!

Keep up with reading and workbook pages!

Enjoy your days off, but you should be putting at least an hour of AP biology time in each day
